Messerschmitt bf109E-4 1:72

The Messerschmitt Bf109E was the first variant to use the Daimler-Benz DB601A engine. Previous versions had used the Jumo 210, a much smaller and lighter engine. This made it necessary to incorporate major design changes to the 109E including moving the main radiators to the wings and improving the strength of the airframe.

The Airfix kit is of a Messerschmitt Bf109E-4, which was the main type of German fighter engaged in the Battle of Britain. The Messerschmitt Bf109E-4 had 20 mm MG-FF/M wing cannon, which used a new type of shell that had superior explosive characteristics to previous shells.

The Messerschmitt Bf109 was at a disadvantage during the Battle Britain because it had a very limited fuel supply, sufficient for only 10 minutes combat over London. This made it very difficult to escort the bombers to their targets and back when the Luftwaffe switched their attack to London.

Over 560 Bf109E-4's were built in total.
